JOHN CURTIN, GUITARIST

John Curtin, a Milford Pennslvania resident since 1988, grew up in New York City where he began studying guitar at age 10. At 17 he was offered his first recording contract with Capitol Records. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Music, John joined the music arranging staff of Warner Bros Music at age 22. There he worked very closely with many top musicians (Keith Emerson, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke) arranging and editing their music for print. While on staff at Warners, John began studying jazz guitar with Allen Hanlon. Years later, guitar study continued in earnest with Howard Morgen. It was Howard Morgen who taught John the intricacies of playing and arranging for solo guitar.

John Curtin plays an assortment of guitars, but for his solo act he prefers a Guild Songbird; an acoustic guitar that "plugs in." His original arrangements for solo guitar range in style from jazz standards of the early 20th century (George Gershwin, Cole Porter), gypsy jazz (Django Reinhardt), to modern pop tunes and the ubiquitous Beatle ballads.

Whether playing finger style or using a flat pick, John's solo guitar arrangements are original; often very rhythmic. Some people say his style is reminiscent of the late Chet Atkins. John regularly performs at a number of restaurants, resorts and art galleries throughout the Pocono area.
